According to fresh research, the average earner in the UK would require half a century of income to attain the wealth level of the richest 10% of the population.
Growing Economic Disparity Over Time
The analysis reviewed net worth information including the 2020-22 timeframe and found that in the mid-2000s, it would have taken 38 years of typical employment income to reach the richest segment of the economic ladder.
A senior economist associated with the report stated: "Economic disparities in Britain are currently so significant that a regular employee saving all their earnings during their working years would continue to be incapable to reach the top of the financial hierarchy."
Assessing the Economic Gap
The research found that the difference between the assets of the average person and an individual in the richest segment was £1m in the mid-2000s, but had increased to £1.3m in actual value by the pandemic years.
The analyst continued: "These gaps are particularly worrying as wealth mobility in Britain is restricted – individuals who begin life well-off tend to remain affluent, and vice versa."
Relative Wealth Inequality
Despite the wealth gap widening in actual numbers, the portion of total wealth in the UK possessed by the most affluent homes – called "relative wealth inequality" – has been "mostly consistent since the eighties," as stated in the analysis.
Throughout these years, complete net worth in the UK increased dramatically from thrice the annual GDP, to nearly seven and a half times.
Contributors of Economic Disparity
Termed "passive" increases, via increasing property values and changes in superannuation evaluations, were the key contributors of the widening wealth gap from 2010 onward, per the analysis.
These increases tended to accrue to elderly homeowners, the analysis reveals – worsening the generational financial disparity.
Generational Economic Gaps
The average wealth gap between thirty-somethings and sixty-somethings more than doubled in actual value, from £135,000 in 2006-08, to £310k.
Geographic Differences
Additionally, there were stark regional variations, with the average level of net worth in recent years amounting to £290k in the SE of England, where property prices have generally grown substantially, as opposed to £110k in the north-east.
Health Crisis Years Impact
Throughout the COVID period, when numerous employees were protected by the government-supported job retention program, and pandemic lockdowns curtailed consumption options, the data shows numerous families were capable of accumulating, enhancing their financial standing.
More affluent homes performed significantly better, nevertheless. "The median home in the poorest fifth saw their liquid savings grow by only eighty pounds during the COVID years (2019-20 to 2021-22), roughly identical to the 24 months before COVID. In contrast, the average household in the wealthiest fifth saw their cash reserves rise by £4,200," the report finds.
